Project Overview
With the advancement of graphics, sounds, complexity, and technology, the importance of video game controllers is commonly overlooked. It is, in fact, the hardware that is conceived first and games are formatted and produced with this in mind. The controller ultimately determines how many options the game will include. We examined the evolution and impacts of the most important controllers in gaming history. We looked at the components that the player enjoyed or disregarded and that played a part in controller advancement. We also examined the effects certain controllers had on gamer interaction. One of the easiest ways to show the effect the controller had on the gamer was to look at which components lasted over time. The CrossShaped button, AnalogControllers, ShoulderButtons, and TwoHandControllers evolved throughout because of consumer success. There were also controllers based solely on how the gamer could interact with the game itself. The NES ZapperLight Gun, the NES PowerPad, and the NintendoRevolution controls offered control beyond the basic thumb control of the norm. We have linked the controllers together in a timeline to show the evolution of some revolutionary controllers.
